How Our Shear Plate Collimation Testers Can Help

Our shear plate collimation testers allow quick and easy beam collimation to speed up the process of aligning your optical setups.

A shear plate collimation tester is one of the simplest devices you can use to examine optical wavefronts. You can also use it to measure wavefront curvature and the convergence and divergence of large-radius optical components.

Features and Benefits of Our Shear Plate Collimation Testers

A shear plate is a thick, high-quality optical flat. Our shear plate collimation testers feature a wedged optical flat housed in a heavy-duty anodized aluminum frame for exceptional durability.

We carry testers in aperture sizes ranging from 10 to 250 millimeters. You can use each tester across the visible and near-infrared radiation (NIR) spectrums, from 350 to 2,500 nanometers.

    Shear Plate Collimation Tester Applications

Our shear plate collimation testers have uses in various applications and industries, such as:

    • Medical
    • Automotive
    • Light and display measurement
    • Spectrometers
    • Light detection and ranging (lidar)

How Our Shear Plate Collimation Testers Work

Our shear plate collimation testers are easy to use and produce instant results. To examine an optical wavefront in your collimating system, place your tester at a 45-degree angle of incidence to an expanded beam, illuminating the face of the tester. The beam will reflect onto a screen placed at a right angle to it.

The screen will show two overlapping circular images and the shadow of the collimation tester’s reference wire. You’ll see fringes — parallel patterns of dark and light areas — in the overlapping section of the two images.

You can collimate the beam by adjusting the system until the fringe pattern is parallel to the shadow of the collimation tester’s reference wire. If you’re collimating a horizontal beam, the fringes will be horizontally oriented. If you’re collimating a converging or diverging beam, the fringes will be tilted slightly.
